Member of Parliament from Vatakara Lok Sabha constituency, the strongest CPI (M) bastion in Kerala, Mullappally Ramachandran of Indian National Congress, son of veteran freedom fighter Sri Mullappally Gopalan, has come a long way from a boy in a backward village of Vatakara, Kerala to a person chosen to represent the masses in an August House-the Lok Sabha.
Currently Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Mullappally Ramachandran was returned five times consecutively to the 8th, 9th,10th,11th and 12th Lok Sabha from Cannanore, another strong fortress of CPI(M) . When the election was fought and won to the 8th Lok Sabaha in 1984 Cannanore was an extremely backward constituency with no signs of development in any sphere. To his credit he was able to accomplish the following developments in the constituency. To name a few:
- The Industrial Growth Centre.
- The Provident Fund Regional Office.
- The FM radio station (rare in the early 1980s).
- The high power TV transmitter at Kannur
- The low power TV transmitters at Mahe and Mananthody, ensuring International games coverage.
- Three Kendriya Vidhyalayas – at Mangattuparamba, Kannur & Payyannur
- Mapila Bay Fishing Harbour at Kannur.
- Chombala Fishing Harbour in my village in Vatakara.
- Co-operative Management Institute.
- Retention of Aralam Farm
- Cannannore Airport project.
- Railway Platform and amenities development- The second computerized booking centre in Kerala.
- Railway gates to reach remote places away from the townships.
- Retention of Army Hospital.
VISION VATAKARA 2025 is a unique development seminar organised by Mullappally Ramachandran to usher in the wind of developmental change in Vatakra.
